European Commission - DG Regional Policy
Cities of Tomorrow
DG Regional Policy is currently undertaking a review of its policy instruments in view of its post-2013 legislative proposals. One important area of reflection is urban development and how Cohesion Policy may support cities. OurThe overall objective is to understand what future challenges different types of European cities will face and what approaches can be successful to tackle them. The overarching question is the role Cohesion Policy may and should play in this respect.
The work should result in:
1. awareness of the future impacts of a range of trends, the vulnerability of different types of cities to these impacts, as well as of the opportunities that may arise;
2. showcases of innovative approaches by cities for tackling future challenges, the role cities may play in meeting EU objectives and the relevance of EU intervention;
3. rationale and recommendations for the future of the urban dimension in Cohesion Policy.
The reflection process will address two main questions: a) the challenges cities will be facing and (b) the possible responses to these challenges. The first one would revolve around the determinants of the future, the second around how these determinants can be acted upon.
