Introduction I have conducted my research activity mostly at the Department of Economics of Ancona (Italy) - but I have also accomplished long research stays in Great Britain (Oxford) and Germany (Freiburg, Jena). I have been lecturing in the Faculty of Economics of Ancona since 1990. I have also taught in the University Friedrich Schiller of Jena (Germany) (2000-2009) and in the University of Macerata (1994-1997). My research activity is rooted in the neo-istitutionalist scientific paradigm and in the past decade I have worked mainly in the fields of urban and local development, European integration, the foundations of the policy making process and the economics of capital conservation. I have also a deep interest in the critical-historical analysis of economics, in particular of the neo-istitutionalist scientific paradigm. Currently the focus of my research activity is on explaining and evaluating the potential development trajectories of local systems both large cities and small towns, booming or declining localities. I am also working on understanding how policy makers build the knowledge they need to design and implement local development policies. Teaching has constantly been an important part of my work. I enjoy teaching in itself. I found that teaching allows one to explore the extraordinary variety of modern economics. In recent academic years I have been giving courses on 'urban economics', and 'policy-making analysis" in my Faculty - besides I have given courses on 'Urban Development in Eastern Germany' at the FSU-Jena and on 'policy analysis' at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa As an applied economist I have been working mostly in the field of strategic planning for urban and regional development and the evaluation of public investment
