Recent Working Papers Re-defining the Boundaries of Major Italian Cities (in collaboration with P. Veneri) Download the Working Paper (pdf 208 KB) Abstract The processes of spatial polarisation and territorial integration that have taken place in Italy since the 1950s have not been accompanied by corresponding institutional adaptations, generating the current huge discrepancy between the functional and political-administrative organisation of the territory. As argued in the paper, this institutional lock-in is rooted in a mistaken conceptualisation of territorial integration, which has focused on the identification of ‘travel-to-work areas’, rather than on the formation of inter-municipal territorial systems which have the nature of cities de facto – larger and structurally different from the legal cities. The paper corroborates this thesis by focusing on the eight largest Italian cities de jure, identifying, on the basis of both functional and morphological features, the corresponding cities de facto. _____________________________ 2. Cities in the European Policy Framework This paper focuses on the changing role of cities in the EU's policy framework sinche the publication of the European Commission 's communication Towards and Urban Agenda in the European Union - and on the implications of the paradigm of 'territorial competition' for the long-term economic development of European cities. 3. Urban and Regional Development in Eastern Germany after the Reunification This research project focuses on the strucutural changes that have taken place in Eastern Germany's cities after the political-administrative re-unification of 1989-1991. 1. Le città della "Terza Italia": struttura e prestazioni
Delle città dell’Italia centrale – della loro struttura e delle loro prestazioni passate e, soprattutto, potenziali – si ha oggi una conoscenza molto scarsa. Questo progetto di ricerca, che intende contribuire ad alllineare in termini diconoscenza l'Itali aagli altriPaesi europei, si pone l'obiettivo di identificare un meta-modello per l'identificazione di scenari evolutivi delle città dell'Italia centrale, che si trovano oggi, praticmente tutte, in una frase di transizione strutturali.
2. Identità urbana e sviluppo economico nelle Marche
Tema centrale del progetto di ricerca è la traiettoria di sviluppo territoriale seguita dalle Marche negli ultimi decenni, caratterizzata da processi di coalescenza territoriale che hanno condotto alla formazione di "nuove città". La nascita di queste nuove città ha profondamente cambiato il potenziale di sviluppo ecoomico delle Marche e suggerisce un profondo ri-orientamento delle politiche regionali e urbane nella Regione (Progetto di ricerca finanziato dalla Fondazione Cariverona e dall'Università Politecnica delle Marche)
